On May 2 - 4, 2008 a Hoophouse Workshop was hosted by the Laramie County Master Gardeners. On Friday evening a lecture was given by Del Jimenez (New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service) at the Kiwanis Community House in Lions Park. The lecture was open to Laramie County Master Gardeners and the general public. Del is an entertaining speaker, and he discussed some national trends in family gardening and small commercial horticulture ventures, as well as the similarities and differences in agriculture between Wyoming and New Mexico. On Saturday, the agenda was to construct a 17 X 32 foot structure for around $1.00 per square foot, with simple tools and construction methods. On Sunday, we installed a drip irrigation system that watered the entire structure with the turn of a valve and built a work table and 3 raised beds. We had the site cleaned up and Del on his way by 12:30. Here are some photos of Saturday. More to come!! New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Circular 606 is a pdf file that provides an overview of the hoophouse construction. Here is an expense sheet with the estimated cost of the structure. For more information, send an email to wandamanley@hotmail.com and put "Hoophouse" in the subject line or call 640-5910.
